encausticamp spotlight: judy wise

Back to spotlighting the instructors that I will be teaching with at EncaustiCamp this July in Salem, Oregon. July 13th-July 17th. There is still time to register!

Judy and I crossed internet paths, oh, probably back 4-5 years ago and I felt an instant connection with her. The year I moved to Chicago, Judy happened to be traveling to Wisconsin to teach an art journaling and an art business workshop and I knew that I just had to go up there to meet her. I remember when I entered the building where she was conducting her workshop, I heard a clear and joy-filled laughter filling the hallway and I thought- that has got to be Judy! And I followed the laughter and there she was. We gave each other a great big hug like we were old friends.

I am so thrilled to be teaching with her this summer at EncaustiCamp. She is a wonderful artist, a generous teacher, and truly a bright light. Here is her class description:

My class is entitled “Painting from the Hot Palette” and will cover the techniques of adding colorants (dry pigments, oil paint) to encaustic medium and then painting with those colors just as you would paint from a palette of colors in oils. The difference is that wax hardens immediately so there is no waiting for paint to dry. In addition, the texture is yummy!

I’ll be throwing in some transfer techniques (the above painting includes a transfer) and some collage tips. This class is suitable for beginners as well as experienced encaustic students.

I am hoping that I will get to peek into Judy’s class to see her encaustic painting techniques! To see more of her work, visit her blog– you won’t be disappointed, she always has a visual feast to share whether it’s her artwork, travels, or vegetables and flowers growing in her garden.

  1. How wonderful to be able to identify a friend through their laughter alone…I love that!!

I also think that the term ‘hot palette’ is a gem…

what a great introduction, and sense of anticipation, you’re creating through your meet the artists posts.

  2. Is this the same Judy Wise that works with plaster? If so, I just got her new book and love it. I took a workshop at Trish Seggebruch’s studio a couple of years ago with Stephanie Lee, and have just now gotten interested in plaster again.
