Seeking a Lightness

Bridgette Guerzon Mills | Seeking a Lightness, encaustic mixed media, 12×12 inches

So far this year has been a heavy one and it was only until this past week that I have been able to get into the studio because it was time- work needs to resume and in truth, creating has always been the best way for me to process the events in my life.

This is my first finished painting of this year and while I was creating I was seeking a lightness of being. A letting go, so as not to be mired down by loss, grief, and the weight of the world.

Whenever I think of the phrase “lightness of being” I can’t help but think of a book I read eons ago in high school The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. I’m pretty sure that I probably understood just a fraction of the themes in that book because I was so young when I read it. I should reread. Putting that on my towering book pile of books to read this year. Crazily I still have the book. It has traveled along with me through all our cross country moves. I have a hard time letting go of books, much to my husband’s dismay.

    1. Thanks Sabah, the writing after the creation of my pieces is an important part of my creative process. Thanks for visiting!

  1. “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” the film, was so . . . sumptuous. Philip Kaufman, Walter Murch and Sven Nykvist and acting as if in a hothouse Daniel Day-Lewis, Juliette Binoche and Lena Olin. It could be nothing but.

    1. I have not seen the film- although I remember when it came out. I will have to put it on my to-watch list.
