I always enjoy reading and seeing Melanie’s Inspire Me Thursday entries, so I decided to give this week a go. This week’s theme is inspiration in the form of music.
I find inspiration for my mixed media pieces in some of the most mundane objects- an interesting twig, a leaf, a stone. More often than not it is something in nature that moves me. But I am also inspired by the beauty of language. I keep a journal of snippets, phrases, words that make my breath catch in my throat. Phrases that are so powerful I feel punched in the gut. These I glean from books I read, novels usually. I also pull from my own poetry that I’ve written throughout the years.
Music has always been so important to me throughout my life. And now, when I paint I listen to music and it helps me to loosen up. I’ve never, though, turned to music for inspiration. So this was a new experience.

I’ve been listening to the soundtrack of the movie, Garden State, off and on for a while now. There are so many songs on that soundtrack that I really love. But it was the last song of the cd that I drew upon this week. The song is called “Winding Road” by Bonnie Summerville.

Anonymous asked me to say something about my technique. Basically I always use my own photographs in my work. Sometimes I’ll use the photo as is. Othertimes I’ll creat a transfer, as I did in this one, or do a photocopy to age it, or print it out on a transparency. Then I use acrylic paints to integrate the photo transfer with whatever background I have created. In this one I used a map as a background. But I painted it over quite a bit that no one else but myself knows that it’s there! The 2 fern fronds are actual dried and pressed ferns.
