….to find joy in the small things. I think that’s why I love birds so much. Among other reasons. But I have found in the last decade that when I start to get overwhelmed by the troubles of the world, I instinctually turn to birds. My 100 Days of Birds series happened in 2017. Don’t have to say much more than that. At the rate of terribleness of 2025 so far, I should probably return to another series like that!
While I was in the middle of finishing up my earthy works for the upcoming show, I snuck these colorful birds in. Well, the birds aren’t colorful, but the pieces are more colorful than my usual palette.
I had fun making these. I found my joy in the making, amidst worry and disbelief of what is happening in places like Chicago, which I will always consider my hometown even though I don’t live there anymore.
I’ve always seen birds as messengers. Some say between us and the spirit world. For me though, they remind me that life on this earth is just a moment and is often challenging, AND because of this, be present and seek out the beauty in the every day. Make the world a better place with intention and actions, and also find your joy in the small things. What’s the point otherwise.
I just shipped these two paintings to Lark & Key in Charlotte, NC. I have pieces in the current Art of the Bird show and these two will be added as soon as they arrive.
