Chicken Dreams

Chicken Dreams, encaustic mixed media, 10×8 inches, available in my online shop

For years I have been talking to my husband about how I want to have chickens one day. I know they are not easy to take care of. Friends who have or have had (past tense intended) chickens have told me about the reality of chicken tending. But I can’t help but dream of a day when I live farther out where I can have some land and some chickens. And maybe a pygmy goat!

I remember once in Chicago visiting a collector’s house in the city who had chickens! They had a beautiful chicken coop too. I think her father was an architect and designed the coop after Mies van der Rohe. Or maybe it was Frank Lloyd Wright. I can’t remember anymore. It was a contemporary and delightful chicken coop in a tiny Chicago lot backyard. Where I live in a suburb north of Baltimore, you can only have chickens if you have at least one acre of land. I guess people get more particular about noise the farther apart the houses are. hmmm.

Anyway. I’m speaking out to the universe that one day I’d like to live on land and have chickens. Ideally there would be some kind of water- river or lake and definitely mountains nearby to hike. Lots of trees, but also a place to grow vegetables and giant sunflowers. Just putting it out there all together, just in case. Come to think of it, I’ve always wanted a pet turtle too. I can dream, can’t I?
