I am really excited to share that I have a solo show coming up at Gallery Blue Door in Baltimore. The show is called “Duality of Being” and I see it as a meditation on themes that I am often thinking about in my work- integrating opposites, reciprocity, we are earth, and interconnectedness. I am really looking forward to seeing how it comes together on the walls. Peter Dubeau will be in the Main Gallery and I will be in the Alcove Gallery.
Exhibition statement:
Duality is a state of having two contrasting forces like light/shadow or rational/intuitive or anima/animus existing at the same time. I approach my creative process as a mediation on integrating duality in a way that brings harmony and unity. In my mixed media practice I often combine photographic images with paint to create a bridge between two worlds – the real and the reconstructed, the gridded compositions with the unstructured natural forms. Salvaged materials partnered with images of untamed plant forms and branches bring together the man-made with the organic. The salvaged materials though, come from the earth originally- wood from trees, metal from earth mineral, and cloth from plants. In the end, we are all connected and we are all from the Earth. There is a Mayan phrase that I think about often, “In Lak’ech” which translates to “You are My Other Me” which suggests a universal unity. This collection of work reflects on integrating the duality within and without; and in so doing, finding a path where we can live in reciprocal relation with each other and the Earth.
