Holding Fast is an encaustic mixed media painting by Bridgette Guerzon Mills
Bridgette Guerzon Mills | Holding Fast, encaustic mixed media 10×8 inches, heading to Cappaert Contemporary Gallery

I finished this piece in early mid-March. It had its beginnings though many many months ago as a collage in my journal. I always wanted to make it bigger on a panel with encaustic. Going from 7×5 inches to 10×8 inches is not that big of a leap, I know. But maybe one day I will go much larger.

At the time I was really playing with layering and transparency. I wanted to called it: Transcendence Comes From Being Rooted….but the bottom image is actually not roots or a plant. It’s seaweed! I took the photo when I was at the beach. Seaweed, not being a plant, doesn’t have roots. They have structures called “holdfasts”. I love that name- they help the seaweed hold onto rocks or to stay upright in currents so they don’t get swept away.

Seems like a good message to keep in mind these days.

Encaustic collage including inkjet print on rice paper, inkjet print on paper, tissue paper and thread.

I just shipped this piece along with two others to Cappaert Contemporary Gallery in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin for their 2025 season, which is just around the corner!
