Do you look for signs from the universe? I think there must be something in our human DNA that instills some kind of need of finding meaning in our surroundings that tell us we’re on the right path. Or maybe that’s just me.
This bright piece is another one that’s been in process for a really long time. I honestly cannot say when this was started. I believe I was doing small panels based on walls or surfaces that had been interesting surfaces either from natural wear and tear or human graffiti, or both. I took the photo of the yellow wall with the white blocks of paint covering up graffiti probably 10 years ago. Not sure when I made the wall painting.
I brought the yellow wall painting panel with me to do my recent art talk/demo at Artists and Makers Studios in Rockville. I wanted to show a transfer technique (bird), adding a collage element (numbers on tissue paper), adding texture with stencils (circles on the bottom), and using transfer paper to draw on the wax surface (plus signs in the sky). I brought it home and worked on it a little more to bring it to a finished state. I tend to really like the pieces that I start in demos. I think because it’s a demo, I just kind of add things to the surface without thinking too much. I just want to show the technique. And then when I look at it later, I’m like, oh, I kind of like that because of the random markmaking and looseness.
And then I look at it some more, especially when I am giving it a title and then it all makes sense to me. The unconscious surfacing up through various symbols and marks. Hmmm.
