The Seven States Exhibit: Photomidwest

My best work is often almost unconscious and occurs ahead of my ability to understand it. -Sam Abell

Last post I mentioned that I have made lots of small panels, 5×7 and 4×6 inches, in the past 10 years. Most of those panels became covers for my handbound journals that I used to make. A couple of times when I would make a small panel I would think to myself- I need to do this again, but bigger. And sometimes I would actually follow through. This painting is one of them.

This is the first panel here and several years later, actually it was spring of this year, I finally returned to it and made “Upon the Sky” using acrylics, graphite, paper from old books, and the gel transfer I created from my photograph.

I am beyond thrilled to share that “Upon the Sky” will be exhibiting at the Seven State Juried Photography Exhibit at the University of Wisconsin Madison. The exhibit will be at the Porter Butts and Class of 1925 Galleries, second floor of the Memorial Union building. The juror for the exhibition was Sam Abell, a documentary photographer who worked for National Geographic during the 1970s and 80s. He will be at opening reception and I am really looking forward to meeting him.

When I saw the call for this exhibit and saw that they would consider mixed media photography based art my interest was piqued, but I really thought my work would be “too” mixed media. And then I thought, well, I won’t know until I try. So I submitted and am really so honored to have one of paintings selected. I am planning on attending the reception, hopefully not too late as I have to come from Chicago and it is a bit of a trek. You never know how traffic will be getting out of the city on a Friday afternoon. But I will be there!

  1. Congratulations, Bridgette. That’s a great piece, and I think the fact that they chose it shows they were willing to go beyond the boundaries of “straight” photography. Have fun at the reception!
