Winter’s Embrace

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.” – Lewis Carroll

It seems like much of this country is hunkering down for a deep freeze. It was pretty cold today in Maryland, but nothing like the winters that we are used to in Chicago. And from what I hear it is really, really cold there this week. Like, I can’t even imagine how cold it feels. I actually love winter. I love the snow and the bare branched trees. I like wearing sweaters and legwarmers and cooking over a hot stove. But below zero temps is no fun. Especially with wind chill. Brrrr. Hope everyone stays safe and warm.

This was officially the last painting I made in 2013. I was actually working on a 30×40 inch painting, painting loosely and abstractly. But right next to it, I had this panel that I’ve had in progress for many months. And I worked on both on that last day in the studio, going from one to the other. It’s seems counter intuitive to work this in such contrasts in both size and style. But I often do that.

  1. This is such a beautiful winter piece. I too love and embrace winter and more so since I started painting four years ago. It seems there’s a lot more light everywhere.

    Happy New Year to you!

  2. Keep warm – I too love the more romantic side of winter but not the other aspects that make life difficult – we are experiencing a mild winter but awful storms high winds, flooding etc that just cause misery to many – I long for a snowfall and a crisp winter day! I love ‘winters embrace’

    1. It’s really bad here too Rosie! the whole country is under a deep freeze and temperatures way, way below normal. It’s crazy. I hope things get better over there as well.
