I was in a state of distress when I came to this panel the other day. I was feeling agitated and disillusioned. I decided that I had to find a way to shed those feelings. And so I began painting and laying down bits of paper and fabric. As I painted and scraped and adhered and cut, I felt the outside world slip away and I entered a space of acceptance. Not an acceptance of acquiescence and giving up, but rather, accepting that there are things I cannot control and not letting it affect my inner peace/stability. This is a huge shift for me. I’ve always been a sponge of outside feelings and events and it’s always been difficult to set up a barrier between the outer world and my inner world.

I went to my rheumatologist yesterday and he asked how I was doing with dealing with tall he tumultuous political events that have been happening and I replied, “I’ve started chanting ‘serenity now, serenity now’ to myself because otherwise I get too worked up”.

He looked up from his computer screen and said, “hmm, but from my recollection, that doesn’t end well”.

I laughed and said, “No, it doesn’t!”

At least I have my creative practice and process to ward off what comes later! This piece, Shift, really helped me pull out of my dark mood and left me feeling grateful.
