Here’s a fun one that’s different than my norm. My main intention with this piece was playing with surface and the layers beneath. Intentional with my layers of colors so that when I inscribed in to the top layer, the red underneath would be visual. While I have been working on these encaustic mixed media house shaped panels I have been doing different work on paper with watercolors, exploring mythological creatures of my own making and reading up on various folk tales and iconographic symbols.
With this piece I wasn’t even sure when or why I decided to add the sacred heart and have it looped in with the plant form. But now after all that’s said and done and I look at it, I’m like, oh I was telling myself the importance of rootedness in order to have an open heart. And the importance of an open heart to be grounded. A healthy balance. Embodied spirit, maybe. Still figuring it out.
Here’s the thing with me, my creative practice allows me to communicate with myself. This is why I write after every piece. When I sit and write is when I’m like, oh, yes, this is what I have been thinking about, but not in a coherent way. My creations are a vital visual stepping stone for me in figuring things out. Truly a visual journal. But without the writing for myself, it is half communicated.
Creating paintings, collages, etc is the way I walk through this world. I don’t know how else to articulate it. It is a very personal journey.
