Each stage of parenting has its gifts and its challenges. Now as a parent of two teenagers I am in the stage where there is a constant worry that wasn’t quite there before because they live increasingly independent lives apart from me. And you just have to trust, Trust with a capital T, that you have prepared them to make the right decisions.

I painted this a few weeks ago during a particularly turbulent week. Can you tell? Ha! This piece makes me laugh because of the fact that the nest image has appeared often in my work in the past 17 years that I have been a mother. But I’m pretty sure it has never appeared like this.

It felt cathartic making this. I think this will be one of those paintings that I will always keep in my personal collection. I feel really connected to it emotionally right now. I have another one that I made when my kids were 5 and 2 years old called Friday Afternoon where I recall all three of us ended up in our separate timeouts. During my timeout I made the painting. I have always loved it and keep it hanging in my studio always.

“Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.” – Pablo Picasso
