Creativity is allowing oneself to make mistakes,
Art is knowing which ones to keep. -Scott Adams

Much like the rest of the country, it has been HOT here this week. I’ve been trying to steal moments in the studio here and there all week, but finally got to paint for a few hours this morning. The heat and stealing moments is not conducive to painting in encaustic, so I have returned to acrylics for now. Which is a nice change. I think after creating all those paintings for the show in a short period of time, I really needed a change in gears. Sometimes you just need to shake things up.

I had actually been feeling sluggish and unmotivated, which is very unlike me! I was a bit worried, but knew that these things happen and it would pass. But it took an “OH NO!!!!” moment to make it happen.

I had pulled out this canvas which had been prepared with the image transfer of the trees and had it leaning on the floor against my easel. This canvas has been waiting for me to paint it for several years now. Not even exaggerating. So last week, my 2 year old daughter was painting with watercolors at her easel and decided to paint a big brown blob on top of the branches.

I jumped and exclaimed “OH NO!! That is Mommy’s painting!” and I proceeded to wipe away the brown paint….and then I slowed down and looked. “Oh. Yes. Hmmmmm. Interesting…”

This morning, when I finally had studio time, I finished it. And I have my 2 year old to thank.
