One of my favorite things about painting with encaustic is the ability to create texture whether through the brushwork or inscribing into the surface. I made a reel on IG when I was first working on this piece, which you can see here.
This morning I dropped off 8 paintings to Manor Mill in Monkton, MD for their upcoming show “Represented Artist Takeover” that runs from July 5-August 16th, 2026. The artist reception will be July 18, 4-7 pm!
If you haven’t been to Manor Mill, it is a 3 story historic mill that has been turned into a creative hub of art and music. On the 1st floor there is the clay studio and a shop filled with all sorts of wonderful handmade and creative items and artwork of the represented artists of Manor Mill- we have artwork there year round, separate from the exhibitions that change every 6 weeks or so. The 2nd and 3rd floor is the gallery space for the various exhibits through the year. In this exhibit though, the represented artists are taking over the 2nd and 3rd floors. I brought my larger encaustic pieces, which I’m excited to see up on the walls in the gallery space, plus a few smaller pieces, like this Barred Owl, that I just finished and framed last week!! I can be kind of last minute at times. My non-art life has been a bit overwhelming these past few months. It happens.
This piece measures 14×11 inches. I love the texture in the night sky. The night I finished this piece I heard an owl hooting not too far above me. Love that.
On July 31st, I will be teaching an encaustic class at Manor Mill. To read more about it and to register, go here.
