Misty Overlook, oil painting on canvas by Bridgette Guerzon Mills
Misty Overlook, oil on canvas, 11×14 inches

It’s been a crazy week of travel and then getting sick which means not being able to be in the studio for a most of the week. Which turns out to not be such a bad thing in that it gives a painting time to be and tell me that it’s done. I didn’t think it was when I cleaned up after my last studio day when I worked on this. I was planning on working on it some more, but I think that it’s good that I didn’t. I tend to keep working on my landscapes when I probably should have stopped earlier.

This painting was inspired by a hike I did many years ago in Shenandoah National Park. It was a misty overcast autumn day. But the hills were still golden because of the turning leaves.

I’ve been wanting to paint this scene for years! I’m glad I finally made this painting. I always feel a little scared and uncertain starting a landscape painting. It’s odd. I dont feel that way when I start my mixed media encaustic pieces. hmmm. I wonder what’s that about?

Will I be able to capture not just the landscape, but the feeling I had when looking over the valley? How do I create the textures and layers that I crave in all my paintings whether its oil or encaustic? Will it speak to anyone else? Do I even know what I’m doing?

Luckily with years of creating behind me, I let the questions bubble up, but I start. And then I keep going. Now the task is learning when to stop.
