I have been a little quiet on the posting art front. I am still making, just staying quiet. More often than not, lately I have been feeling conflicted about being on the various social media platforms. Feeding the monster. And also consuming the monster as well. But what is one to do, when it is also necessary and can be a blessing for people who need eyes on the work they do? That is always the question.
I have also been busy with some other happenings in life that have disrupted my studio time. Hopefully I can figure out how to adapt and get back to a productive schedule soon.
This piece is made up many different parts. It’s hard to tell from the photo, but it is a very layered piece. The substrate was first wrapped in the ghost print cloth of an ecoprint. Then encased in encaustic. The plaster cloth is encased with encaustic paint and I did a phototransfer atop the surface. And then last, I sewed birch bark on top of that, like tucking it into a protective shell.
I am thinking of protection. In these days of uncertainty.
When I look back at my body of work through the years, I often have turned to adding thread and stitching to my mixed media works.
I am thinking of mending and repair.
It just occurred to me that this small, layered piece reminds me of a medicine bundle.
I am thinking about healing.
