When Dawn Broke

Bridgette Guerzon Mills | When Dawn Broke, oil, 12×24 inches

In a recent post I mentioned that I was working on oil painting commission of a beach landscape. Often when I work in oils I work on several pieces at the same time. Just seems more efficient that way! I don’t have a huge studio, so when I work in oils, I have to put my encaustic equipment aside. So while I have all the oils out, I like to work on at least two at a time.

This painting was inspired by a hike eons ago it feels like. My family and I went down to hike the high point in VA which is Mount Rogers in southwest part of the state. It was a beautiful hike. The sun was out in the morning but it was chilly as it was in the fall. The higher we hiked, the clouds descended and we were hiking in the fog. Magical. This painting though captures the beginning of the day and the beginning of the trail just as the sun was peaking through the clouds.

I have this hanging on my studio wall now and I just love seeing it when I walk in the room. I feel like it’s a must see in person type of painting. The light breaking through the clouds gives me a hopeful feeling.

I always wanted to make art from the photo and had printed it out. Every time I would leaf through my photo prints looking for inspiration, I would pause and say- one day. So glad that after all these years, I finally did it! To give context of how long ago this hike was and how long I have been wanting to create a painting of this particular scene, here is a photo of my son on that hike. He’s about to turn 18 in two weeks. Time, it really flies by.
